This work depicts a cloud and dragon with a bright gold inlay.
The well-forged iron ground is made in the shape of a four-sided gourd, which blends well with the design of the sword, and the sword guard is thinly ploughed around the sword guard to create a border between the baseplate and the ears, which is then inlaid with silver fabric inlay. The maker's attention to detail can be seen in the effectively hammered lines across the entire baseplate and the deliberately shredded border surrounding the area with the design of the important feathers.
A cloud and dragon design is along the border between the Kiribane base and the ears. In contrast to the intentionally sparse silver nunome zogan, this piece has dense nunome zogan.
The reverse side is sprinkled with characters evoking the appearance of a dragon.
It was probably made by a school known as Edo Higo or Yotsuya Higo at the end of the Edo period, led by Kumagai Yoshiyuki, a craftsman in the Hosokawa family. It is a work that is well suited to the long-handled kobusho (military office) arrangements that were popular at the end of the Edo period.
